Effective bandwidths: Call admission, traffic policing and filtering for ATM networks

چکیده
In this paper we review and extend the e ective bandwidth results of Kelly [28], and Kesidis, Walrand and Chang [29, 6]. These results provide a framework for call admission schemes which are sensitive to constraints on the mean delay or the tail distribution of the workload in bu ered queues. We present results which are valid for a wide variety of tra c streams and discuss their applicability for tra c management in ATM networks. We discuss the impact of tra c policing schemes, such as thresholding and ltering, on the e ective bandwidth of sources. Finally we discuss e ective bandwidth results for Brownian tra c models for which explicit results reveal the interaction arising in nite bu ers. Short title: E ective Bandwidths

Charging Schemes for ATM Networks Based on Virtual Effective Bandwidths
In this paper, we propose charging schemes for ATM networks based on the concept of virtual effective bandwidths (VEB). VEBs were initially developed by the authors to support real-time Connection Admission Control (CAC) in a framework where traffic sources with different quality of service (QoS) requirements are multiplexed into the same finite length queue [6]. VEBs allow different QoS requir...
متن کاملResource Management in Wide-Area ATM Networks using Effective Bandwidths
This paper is principally concerned with resource allocation for connections tolerating statistical quality of service (QoS) guarantees in a public wide-area ATM network. Our aim is to sketch a framework, based on eeective bandwidths, for call admission schemes that are sensitive to individual QoS requirements and account for statistical multiplexing. We begin by describing recent results appro...

متن کاملA Framework for Cost-based Connection Admission Control: Issues in Traffic Shaping and Policing
We propose a minimum cost method for traffic shaping and policing in the context of quality-of-service (QoS) based networks. Given the user's desired QoS and the network's resource availability, our procedure determines the least-cost parameters for a traffic shaper or policer which still guarantees access to the network whilst satisfying the QoS constraints. We illustrate our scheme using on-o...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis of Leaky-Bucket Controlled Pareto-Distributed On/Off Sources
An approximate performance analysis of a leaky bucket with Pareto-distributed On/Off sources is presented. The aggregate of Pareto-distributed On/Off sources is a self-similar traffic. This analysis is applicable to the leaky bucket policing device at the ingresses of (1) a base station in a Wireless ATM network, (2) a wireline ATM network, and (3) future generations of IP-based networks with q...
